Edwards Named Finalist For Award

May 11, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas men’s and women’s assistant golf coach Roy Edwards was named as one of three finalists for the Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf by the Golf Coaches Association of America Tuesday afternoon. Edwards is a finalist along with Auburn’s assistant coach Ryan Cabbage and Tennessee’s assistant coach Bowen Sargent.

“It is definitely an honor to be named a finalist for this award alongside two other great assistant coaches and personal friends of mine in Cabbage and Sargent,” Edwards said. “It was the ultimate compliment just to be nominated by my supervisor and co-worker, Coach (Ross) Randall, because he feels I am deserving of the award. To be named a finalist on top of that is just icing on the cake for me.”

Edwards is in his second season as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s golf programs at Kansas. He played three seasons for the Jayhawks and served as a volunteer assistant for the men’s team after completing his collegiate eligibility. He then served on the Vanderbilt coaching staff for one season before returning to Kansas. Edwards serves as the chief fundraiser for both the men’s and women’s golf programs at Kansas. He is also involved in recruiting and the day-to-day functions included in both programs. His main focus is the financing related to the Knapheide Family Golf Practice Facility.

“We are very proud that Roy has been named a finalist for this national award,” Randall said. “He has done a great job in his two years at Kansas. He makes everyone else’s job much easier with the work he does.”

The Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf is given to the NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA assistant coach that has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom. The recipient of this award has the opportunity to further their professional development by being a guest of TaylorMade-adidas Golf at the PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit, as well as an invitation to the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Kingdom in Carlsbad, Calif. Mike McGraw of Oklahoma State won the inaugural award last year.

The No. 25 Kansas men’s golf team will continue postseason action when it tees off at the NCAA Central Regional, May 20-22, at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
