Kansas Swimmers Among Top-50

May 10, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming squad made quite an impact in the final installment of the Taper & Shave Top 50 as five of the team’s relays broke into the list. Whitney Sondall, Amy Gruber, Gina Gnatzig and Hannah Bakke made the list as individuals.

Gruber had three times on the list including the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Sondall qualified with her record setting time in the 100 backstroke. Gnatzig used her record 200 backstroke time to crack the list. While Bakke, a freshman, broke the list with her 100 breaststroke time.

The five relays that made the list where all Kansas records set throughout the past season. The record times included the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays along with the 200 and 400 medley relays. The 200 freestyle relay was ranked the highest at 21st.

“We’re really proud of our individuals and relays for posting Top 50 times in 2003-04,” coach Clark Campbell said. “NCAA Swimming is the world’s fastest league in the sport and our seasonal achievements are definitely going in the right direction. We will use this as motivation to have a great summer and hopefully put more individuals in the national rankings in 04-05.”
