Former Jayhawk Selected to Minor League All-Star Game

July 29, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – A year after setting the KU school record for home runs in a season, Travis Metcalf has taken his hot hitting to a new level as he was selected to participate in the first-ever Northwest League All-Star Game. The contest, which will feature some of the country’s best Class A ballplayers, will be played at Avista Stadium in Spokane, Wash., on Tuesday, August 3, at 7 p.m.

The standout third baseman has been pacing the Texas Rangers minor league affiliate Spokane Indians offensively at the plate since he was selected in the 11th round of the 2004 Major League Draft after putting up impressive statistics during his junior season at Kansas. With the Indians this season, Metcalf is batting .273 with nine home runs, and leading the Northwest League with 34 RBI and 11 doubles.

In 2004, his last season with the Jayhawks, Metcalf slammed 18 home runs to shatter the school-record for home runs in a season. The record was previously held by Russ Blaylock, who hit 17 for KU during the 1981 season. Metcalf also set career highs with 63 hits and 58 RBI.
