Aug. 27, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Ron Olin, who will retire as chief of police of the City of Lawrence Aug. 31, has been hired as Kansas Athletics’ Director of Security/Internal Controls. Olin begins his duties Sept. 1.

In this newly created position, Olin will evaluate a wide range of Kansas Athletics’ internal controls, policies and procedures; identify weaknesses that may put Kansas Athletics at a security, regulatory, or reputational risk, and suggest improvements where appropriate.

“Ron will advise Kansas Athletics in security-related risk management and security for event-management activities,” said Director of Athletics Lew Perkins. “He will also advise us in our efforts to ensure the highest level of safety for student-athletes, staff, and personnel.”

Olin served as Lawrence’s chief of police from December 1987 until his retirement this summer. He served the police department in various roles since November 1971. He has held an appointed position on the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Committee on Terrorism since 1998. In that role he participated in police missions to Ireland and Northern Ireland (1999), Israel (2004), Ireland (2009), and Switzerland (2010).

He has also been a consultant to law enforcement agencies and corporations on police and emergency response. His latest consulting includes work for the Office for Domestic Preparedness, now a part of the Department of Homeland Security; and the National Institute of Justice.

“Ron is a nationally known and respected expert in this field,” Perkins said. “He has studied police organization, training and response in Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and France. We are extremely excited to welcome him to the Kansas Athletics family.”

Olin is no stranger to university life. He has taught several courses at the University of Kansas, including Violence and Aggression in the Modern World, since 1975. He also taught criminal justice at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence from 1995-2006.

A 1975 graduate of the University of Kansas, Olin earned a Master’s of Administration of Justice–public agency administration, from Wichita State University, Overland Park, Kansas, in 1977. He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in developmental psychology, University of Kansas in 1983.

“I was honored to serve in the Lawrence Police Department for nearly four decades,” Olin said, “and I am delighted to begin this new chapter of my career at the University of Kansas. I’m looking forward to making a significant contribution to Kansas Athletics, its coaches and its student-athletes.”
