LAWRENCE, Kan. – Redshirt junior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoctied a career high in kills with 16, as Kansas swept Sam Houston State in the Jayhawks’ opening game of Kansas Volleyball Invitational, Friday morning at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15.
Jarmoc led the floor with 16 kills and was joined by sophomore outside hitter Sara McClinton with 10 kills on the KU leaderboard. Junior setter Erin McNortondished out 37 assists to help Kansas (3-1) rack up 44 kills.
SHSU (2-3) was led by a pair of double-digit efforts in Kendall Cleveland and Kaylee Hawkins, who tallied 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Both teams played each other tight throughout the opening set, resulting in seven ties and three lead changes. Coming out of a Sam Houston State timeout with the score tied at 22, the Jayhawks would score three of the next four points, with the help of two errors from the Bearkats, to take the set 25-23. Jarmoc paced the Jayhawks offensively in the set, recording six kills and nearly a .700 hitting percentage.
In the second set, the Bearkats came out hot, opening up a 6-2 lead, before KU would go on a 4-0 run to bring the score within one later in the set. Sam Houston State would counter with a 5-0 run of its own to stretch the lead to five, 17-12. The Jayhawks responded, rallying for four-straight points using three kills and a block from senior middle blocker Tayler Tolefree. The 4-0 run would get the score back within two, 17-15. The Jayhawks tacked on another 6-0 run late in the set, when faced with a three-point deficit at 21-18.
The run, led by Jarmoc with four kills, would give the team a 24-22 advantage. After a point from the Bearkats, Jarmoc would finish what she started, teaming up with redshirt junior Catherine Carmichaelfor a block that would close out the set 25-22, after trailing by as many as six. Jarmoc paced the team offensively, adding six kills to bring her total to 11 with a .588 hitting percentage.
The Jayhawks carried the momentum into the third set, opening up a 6-0 lead on the Bearkats to begin the set. The Jayhawks got hot and stayed that way for the rest of the set, never relinquishing the lead, before closing out the set 25-15, on McClinton’s 10th kill. Jarmoc and McClinton would add four kills each to lead the team offensively in the set, bringing Jarmoc’s total 16, tying a career high, and a .652 hitting percentage.
