Kansas Volleyball Wins Third Straight

Jana Correa led all scorers with 15 kills as the University of Kansas volleyball team defeated Utah Valley State, 3-1, Thursday night at the Activity Center in Orem, Utah. The Jayhawks (3-0) prevailed 30-20, 29-31, 30-19 and 30-18 in the opening match of the BYU/UVSC Volleyball Challenge.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Correa hit at a .583 attack percentage and added six digs, five blocks and two aces in the win. Senior Paula Caten contributed 13 kills on a .360 attack percentage to go with seven digs and four aces while senior Josi Lima rounded out the top scorers with 12 kills, seven digs and five blocks.

Senior Andi Rozum recorded a career-best seven aces and a match-best 50 assists in the victory, along with six digs and five blocks. Junior Jamie Mathewson paced the defense with eight digs on the night as the offense registered a season-high .350 hitting efficiency and 14.0 blocks.

UVSC (0-1) was led by Jessica Endres, who notched nine kills and three blocks. Lacee Koelliker ran the Wolverine offense with 33 assists and libero Maegan Hoty turned in a match-high 13 digs in the losing effort. KU held UVSC to just a .123 attack percentage in the match.

“We have two matches tomorrow and didn’t need the extra 25 to 30 minutes on the court tonight,” head coach Ray Bechard said. “We responded well after losing game two and came out stronger in the last two games. We learned from our mistakes and will be ready to go tomorrow against two strong opponents.”

The Jayhawks return to action Friday when they face Montana State at 1 p.m. in Provo, Utah. KU wraps up tournament play Friday night with a match at BYU at 8 p.m.
