Cross Country Ready for Season Opening Meet

The University of Kansas cross country teams will open their 2005 campaign Saturday, Sept. 3, at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan. The Bob Timmons Invitational, which is hosted by the Jayhawks, is set to begin with the women’s 5k race at 9 a.m. followed by the men’s 8k at 10 a.m.

The field includes Allen County C.C. (M/W), Bethany College (M/W), Butler County C.C. (M/W), Cloud County C.C. (M/W), Coffeyville C.C. (M), Garden City C.C. (M/W), Haskell Indian Nations University (M/W), University of Kansas (M/W), Lincoln University (W), University of Missouri-Kansas City (M/W), University of Missouri-Rolla (M/W), Neosho C.C. (M/W), Oral Roberts University (M/W), and Grinnell College (M/W). KU won the men’s meet last year while the women placed second.

The men’s team will be led by returning All-American Benson Chesang (Ravine, Kenya), the 2004 Big 12 champion. Chesang was the first KU runner to win the Big 12 Championships since John Lawson in 1965. The women’s team returns five runners that competed in last year’s NCAA Midwest Regional meet, finishing 16th.

Following the Bob Timmons Invitational the Jayhawks will travel to Manhattan, Kan. on Friday, Sept. 9, for the Kansas State Wildcat Invitational.
