Volleyball Hosts UMKC Tuesday In Home Opener

Kansas volleyball will open its 2007 home season this Tuesday in a 7 p.m. match against UMKC at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.

A Glance At the Jayhawks
The University of Kansas volleyball team (3-3) took second place in the Spartan Invitational going 1-2 over the weekend. The Jayhawks picked up their lone win against <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>MissouriState Saturday to stop a three game losing streak. Brittany Williams paced the off ense with 2.08 kpg and averaged a team-best 1.08 bpg. Emily Brown and Katie Martincich ran the off ense with 5.46 and 4.62 apg. Libero Melissa Manda led on defense digging up 2.92 balls per game.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Scouting the Kangaroos
UMKC enters tonight’s match 3-5 overall. The team is coming off a two game losing streak after being swept by GeorgiaState and TexasState during the Mean Green Volleyball Tournament in Denton, Texas last weekend. Kelly Gettinger currently leads UMKC with 2.62 kpg. Mandy Tipton averages a team-best 4.31 dpg.

Bechard’s Milestone
Head coach Ray Bechard became the winningest coach in KU volleyball history Saturday nightafter the team’s thrilling 3-1 victory over the Missouri State Bears. Bechard surpassed former KUcoach Frankie Albitz with 151 career wins.

All-Time Record vs. UMKC
KU holds a 25-1 all-time record against UMKC and has won the last 14 meetings. The Jayhawksand Kangaroos fi rst meeting dates all the way back to KU’s fi rst year of competition, 1975.

Last Meeting
KU swept the Kangaroos 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-16) last year on Aug. 29 on the Jayhawks’ homecourt.
