KU Volleyball to Host Jayhawk Classic This Weekend
Sept. 2, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Kansas volleyball will look to extend its four-match win streak when it hosts the Jayhawk Classic Sept. 3-4. KU, which opened its season 4-0 for the first time since 2005, will matchup with Akron (2-1) at noon and Arkansas (4-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Jayhawks conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest versus Chattanooga (0-3) on Saturday.
KU’s defense continues to shine as it ranks second in the Big 12 limiting opponents to a .103 attack percentage. Redshirt freshman Caroline Jarmoc has been instrumental at the net as she is second in the conference with 1.43 blocks per set. The Kansas backcourt of freshman libero Brianne Riley and senior defensive specialist Melissa Manda have teamed up well to average 3.43 and 3.00 digs per set, respectively.
On the other side of the ball, senior outside hitter Karina Garlington and junior outside Allison Mayfield have taken care of business. Garlington is third in the Big 12 with 3.86 kills per set, while Mayfield is close behind averaging 3.57 kps, which ranks sixth in the conference.
In addition to Lawrence products Taylor Manning and Tayler Tolefree, fans will see another familiar face in Chattanooga’s Jessica Scott. Scott, a senior right side hitter for the Mocs, attended Free State High School with Manning.
