Volleyball Wins ORU Tournament

Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Kansas volleyball team swept North Texas and Oral Roberts to win the 2004 ORU Classic Saturday at the Cooper Aerobics Center. The Jayhawks defeated the Mean Green 30-19, 30-18 and 30-21 in the morning before sweeping the host Golden Eagles 30-21, 32-30 and 30-18 in the nightcap for the tournament crown. Josi Lima was named MVP while Andi Rozum and Jana Correa earned all-tournament accolades.

In both matches, all 14 active players saw action. Lima led KU with nine kills and a .500 attack percentage against North Texas. Senior middle blocker Ashley Michaels added eight kills (.538 attack percentage) as KU hit at a remarkable .393 clip.

A total of nine Jayhawks recorded three or more kills in a balanced attack against the Mean Green (0-3), who hit just .049 percent in the match. Libero Jill Dorsey led all players with 11 digs while Correa blasted four aces in the win.

Kansas returned to the Aerobics Center later in the day to face the Golden Eagles (2-2) in the championship match. Correa paced KU with 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage and added nine digs. Lima was close behind with 10 kills, eight digs and three aces.

The Jayhawks also received nine kills from freshman opposite hitter Emily Brown, who also had 10 digs. Junior Andi Rozum dished out a combined 56 assists in the two matches.

As a team, Kansas recorded 20 blocks on the day and used a balanced offense to improve to 4-0 on the season.

“We continued to block well today and played a quality match,” KU head coach Ray Bechard said. “It was a great tournament for us and we hope that things go as well for us next weekend when we host.”

Kansas will return to Lawrence to host the 2004 Holiday Inn/Jayhawk Classic Sept. 10-11 at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
