Jayhawk Soccer Defeats Saint Louis to Win Tournament

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore midfielder Nicole Cauzillo connected on her second game-winning goal of the season and Meghan Miller collected her fourth consecutive shutout to lift Kansas soccer to a 2-0 win over Saint Louis in the final game of the 2004 KUStore.com Crimson & Blue Invitational at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 816 was in attendance to see the Jayhawks win the tournament and improve to 4-0 for the first time in school history.

In the first half, both teams collected three shots, but thanks to Cauzillo, Kansas (4-0) was able to take a lead into half time. At the 33:48 mark of the first period, senior Lauren Williams slipped a pass over to Cauzillo, who fired a shot into the back of the net for her second tally of the tournament. Cauzillo, who also scored the game-winning goal of KU’s 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, was honored after the game as the tournament’s Offensive MVP.

In goal, Miller was active in the second half, as the Billikens took eight shots in the period. During the period, Miller made four saves and got some help as the Jayhawks collected a team save and Saint Louis attackers hit two goal posts with shots. After collecting shutouts in both of the Jayhawks’ games during the tournament, Miller was named Defensive MVP of the Tournament.

Senior Rachel Gilfillan put the Jayhawks up 2-0 in the match’s 65th minute as she scored her first goal of the season off a pass from sophomore defender Holly Gault. The Jayhawks fired 15 shots during the match, the most in a game this season.

Kansas takes the road this weekend when it travels to Greenville, S.C., to participate in the Furman Tournament. KU will battle tournament host Furman on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. and Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m.
