Jayhawks In Fifth After Two Rounds of Turning Stone Event

VERONA, N.Y. – Sophomore Chris Gilbert bounced back from a morning round of 78 to shoot a two-under par 70 in the afternoon to lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a fifth-place standing after two rounds of the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate Sunday. Gilbert’s performace left him tied for fourth place individually heading into Monday’s final round
As a team, the Jayhawks shot a 34 over par 308-302–10 for the day and stand 17 strokes behind the current leader, Purdue. Senior Nate Barbee had a strong first round, shooting a 74 which tied him for third after the first round. He ended the day tied for 21st at nine over par after shooting a 79 in the afternoon.
Despite finishing the day in the top five, Kansas head coach Kit Grove felt their was room for improvement.
“That’s o.k.” Grove said of the fifth place standing. “We’ve got our goals set higher than that though.”
Gilbert enters the day tied for fourth at 148 and Barbee is tied for 21st at 153. The other three Jayhawks include Doug Quinones and Dan Waite, who are each tied for 36th at 157 and David Catt, who is tied for 53rd at 161. All three of those golfers shot one round in the 70s and one in the 80s Sunday.
“Any score around 80 is too high,” Grove said of his five players. “We had to count an 80 in the morning. It looked like David (Catt) had some nerves early on. He played poorly the first nine holes, but was solid after that. Doug (Quinones) was hanging in there for a while, but he bogeyed three out of the last four. This is a really hard course and the conditions were cold and windy, which didn’t make things easy.”
Grove has his sights set high as he expects his squad to shoot a considerably better final round, which takes place Monday.
“Hopefully we can get some better weather,” he said. “We need something in the low 290s to try and move up a spot. I’m really expecting a solid round out of Nate and hopefully Chris can continue to play well too.”
Purdue’s 593 total is 12 shots better than Bowling Green. Missouri is third at 606, Connecticut fourth at 609 and Kansas rounds out the top five at 610 of the 18team tournament.
The teams will play the final round Monday morning.
