KU Senior Guard Stephen Vinson Awarded Scholarship for 2005-06 Season
Sept. 6, 2005
LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas senior Stephen Vinson has been awarded a scholarship for the 2005-06 men’s basketball season, coach Bill Self announced Tuesday.
“Stephen has been a great teammate during his time here at Kansas,” Self said. “He’s very positive, a great ambassador on campus and the hardest working Jayhawk in our program. He has improved a tremendous amount since he has been here due to his attitude and work ethic.”
After a stellar high school career at Lawrence (Kan.) High School, Vinson was an invited walk-on for the past three seasons at KU. The 6-2 guard has appeared in 39 games throughout his KU career, including five in 2004-05. A crowd favorite, Vinson has a career scoring average of 0.4 points per game. Vinson said the scholarship was timely for himself and his fiancé, Anna Harvey of Lawrence.
“For now it (the scholarship) couldn’t have come at a better time,” Vinson said. “I got engaged this past summer and this will help with the finances. I’m thankful to coach Self.”
“This was something coach and I talked about but I didn’t expect it,” Vinson added. “I will do everything possible this year to prove I am worthy of this.”
“Stephen will be a great leader for our young guys to follow,” Self said of Vinson who is scheduled to graduate with a degree in communications in May 2006. “His role with this team should be greater than any other time during his career.”
