Vidal Earns Second-Straight Big 12 Rookie Honor

Sept. 6, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second-straight week, Kansas soccer freshman Ingrid Vidal has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week. It also marks the third consecutive rookie of the week honor for KU as freshman Jamie Fletcher garnered the award on Aug. 23.

Vidal collected two goals and two assists for a team-high six points in two wins last weekend to help KU extend a five-match winning streak. Vidal, who has racked up 10 points in the last three games, is tied for the conference lead with 11 points so far this season, while her four goals are tied for second.

In Friday’s 3-1 win at Missouri State, Vidal was involved in all three of KU’s goals. The 5-2 forward first notched the assist on the team’s first two scores and then went the distance herself in the 83rd minute making a move around the last MSU defender before punching a high bouncing ball past the charging goalie. Then, in Sunday’s 2-1 edge versus South Dakota State, Vidal’s goal from 12 yards out in the 73rd minute knotted the score at 1-1 and set the stage for KU’s come-from-behind win.

A Palmira, Colombia native, Vidal becomes the first Jayhawk to earn back-to-back conference newcomer of the week awards in program history and the first KU soccer player to garner consecutive player of the week honors since Colleen Quinn in 2007.

The Jayhawks hit the road this weekend, Sept. 9-11, as they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Purdue Boilermaker Challenge. Friday KU will face Dayton at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest in which Kansas will play the winner of Friday’s Purdue versus Cal State Northridge game.
