Kansas Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season at the UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – –

In its first of four fall tournaments, the University of Kansas tennis team will begin its season at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Collegiate Tennis Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., Friday, Sept. 11.

All eight Jayhawks will travel to Wilmington to compete in both singles and doubles play Sept. 11-13. It will mark the first match as a Jayhawk for freshmen Victoria Khanevskaya and Sara Lazarevic.

Kansas lost seniors Edina Horvath and Yuliana Svistun from last year’s team, but returns six leterwinners, including junior Maria Martinez. Martinez recorded a team-high 20 victories last season to lead the Jayhawks with a 20-13 record while playing at No. 5 singles. She had a solid fall last year posting a 7-3 record in individual play.

Ekaterina Morozova was KU’s No. 2 singles player a year ago and finished the year with a 15-17 overall record. Morozova also played five matches in the spring at No. 1 singles and was 2-3 at the top spot.

Other returnees include senior Kunigunda Dorn and sophomore Erin Wilbert. Dorn played at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, earning one of her wins over No. 32 Tulsa. Wilbert was the No. 6 singles player during the 2009 season and went 14-8 in dual play.

The UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational also features Furman, Georgetown, North Carolina State and host UNC Wilmington. UNCW finished its 2008-2009 campaign 91-30 in singles and 47-11 in doubles play led by senior Kayla Schwenk.
