Volleyball Sweeps Denver for Classic Crown

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas volleyball swept Denver to win the 2004 Holiday Inn/Jayhawk Classic and improve to 7-0 on the season Saturday at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The Jayhawks defeated the Pioneers 30-23, 30-22 and 30-13 in the final match of the 17th annual home event.

Junior middle blocker Josi Lima was named tournament MVP while junior setter Andi Rozum and senior middle blocker Ashley Michaels earned all-tournament team accolades.

Michaels led all hitters with a match-high 13 kills and nine block assists in the win. Lima followed close behind with 12 kills on a .455 attack percentage. Paula Caten added seven kills while Lindsey Morris and Emily Brown added six apiece.

Rozum dished out a match-high 35 assists and four block assists of her own. Senior libero Jill Dorsey again led KU with a match-best 15 digs. A total of 13 Jayhawks saw action in the win.

KU out-blocked the Pioneers (2-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) 11.0 to 5.0 and posted an impressive .321 attack percentage on the day. The Jayhawks also tallied nine service aces (three from Dorsey) and held Denver to just a -.042 hitting mark in game three.

“Our physicalness and aggressiveness at the net really wore Denver down in game three,” KU head coach Ray Bechard said. “They [Denver] fought really hard the first two games but we showed our depth and athleticism throughout the entire match.”

Kansas will next be in action Tuesday as it travels to UMKC. The Jayhawks and Kangaroos will begin at 7 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo.
