Wissel Named Big 12 Runner of the Week

Sept. 11, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second time in his career, Colby Wissel was named the men’s Big 12 Cross Country Runner of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Wissel, a senior from Elm Creek, Neb., won the Kansas State vs. Kansas Duel in a 5K time of 15:07.6. Wissel dominated the field by finishing 35 seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Bret Imgrund. His performance also led KU to a 35-22 team win against the Wildcats.

It was at this same time last year that Wissel won his first Big 12 Runner of the Week award for his sub-15 minute performance (14:57.2) at the 2006 Kansas State vs. Kansas Duel.

This is the fourth time a Jayhawk has been named runner of the week. Wissel joins Brian Jensen (1998) and Benson Chesang (2005) as the only other Kansas runners to receive the award.

Nichole Jones of Baylor won the Big 12 Runner of the Week for the women.

Kansas will next be in action on Sept. 29 at the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
