Sept. 12, 2004
LAWRENCE, Kan. – After posting a perfect 2-0 mark at the 2004 Selected Kickoff Classic hosted by Furman in Greenville, S.C. over the weekend, six members of the Kansas soccer team were selected to the All-Tournament team for their outstanding play.
Freshman defender Afton Sauer, sophomore defenders Holly Gault and Nikki Alvarez, and senior midfielder Lauren Williams were named All-Tournament performers after they led the Jayhawks to a 3-0 win over tournament host Furman on Thursday and a 3-1 victory over No. 7 Clemson on Saturday. The win over Clemson was the first victory over a top 10 opponent in program history.
In addition to the four KU players named All-Tournament, senior forward Rachel Gilfillan was selected as the tournament’s Offensive MVP and goalkeeper Meghan Miller was selected Defensive MVP. Gilfillan collected her second goal of the season in the second half against Clemson to help propel KU to the victory. Miller, who saw her school-record shutout streak of five consecutive matches and 544:36 minutes snapped late in the first half against Clemson, made seven saves in the two games.
Kansas is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when it travels to Champaign, Ill., to take on No. 14 Illinois.
