Kansas Rallies Back From Two Set Deficit To Defeat Wyoming, 3-2
LAWRENCE, Kan. – After dropping its first two sets, the University of Kansas volleyball team rallied back to win its next three behind 23 kills from sophomore Karina Garlington and defeat Wyoming 3-2 (27-29, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 20-18) in game one of the Cowgirl Classic.
Kansas improves to 5-2 with the win, while Wyoming drops to 0-7.
Garlington’s career-best 23 kills are the most kills by a KU player since Savannah Noyes had 23 on Oct. 28, 2006.
After dropping sets one and two 29-27 and 25-23, respectively, Kansas finally found an answer in set three. The turning point came when the Jayhawks took an 18-17 lead and, although the Cowgirls tied the score five times, KU gave it up its lead just two more times in the remainder of the match. Tied at 23-23, two Wyoming errors awarded KU the third set, 25-23.
In set four, KU led through 23-22. Wyoming soon took a 24-23 advantage, but a pair of errors from the Cowgirls and a huge block assist from junior Paige Mazour and freshman Nicole Tate earned Kansas a 26-24 win to force a fifth set.
The Jayhawks again held the lead through the entire fifth set until Wyoming took just its second lead since set three at 15-14. The teams tied at points 15-18 until a kill from freshman Nicole Tate and a block from senior Natalie Uhart and Garlington ended the match with a 20-18 victory. It was the third set of the match to go into extra points.
Tate notched her second consecutive double-double posting career highs with 64 assists and 13 digs. It was the first 60-assist performance by a Jayhawk since Katie Martincich had 62 assists on Nov. 18, 2006.
Three more players joined Garlington in double figure kills including seniors Savannah Noyes and Uhart who contributed a season-best 15 kills a piece. Freshman Allison Mayfield added 11.
Mazour also had a career night finishing with a team-high six block assists and tallying five kills on a .300 attack percentage.
Kansas will play again later today at approximately 5 p.m. against Cleveland State. Live stats will be available at www.wyomingathletics.com.
