LAWRENCE Kan. Behind junior Ben Welle, the Kansas men’s golf team will return to the Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado, September 15-16, in its second tournament of the 2014-15 season.

Welle led the KU last year at the Ram Masters Invitational, where he tied for 15th with a three-round score 214 (+4).  In his first tournament of the season, Welle is coming off of a top-10 finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, where he tied for ninth with a three-round score 213 (E).

“It was the first tournament and we had a couple guys finish in the top-10,” Welle said. “I think that gave us confidence rolling into the next tournament. I think the team’s depth this year is a lot better than last year.  Knowing the course will be a big help and playing 54 holes on that course last year will help. I think we can take a shot at winning this tournament.”

Kansas third-year head coach Jamie Bermel will be returning to his old stomping grounds, where he coached Colorado State for 13 years.

“I was there for 13 years. I know that golf course front and back,” Bermel said. “I know how to play it and what happens when the wind changes. I feel I can help the team with the course with the greens and how far the ball flies.”

The Jayhawks team will consist of senior Bryce Brown, juniors Welle and Connor Peck, sophomore Chase Hanna and freshman Daniel Hudson.  Freshman Spencer Painton will play as an individual.
Brown and Peck both finished in the top-10 in the Wolverine Intercollegiate. Peck shot a three-round 212 (-1) and Brown shot a three-round 213 (E) as an individual to tie for ninth.

“Bryce Brown played as an individual, as a fifth year senior he played pretty well,” Bermel said. “That part was encouraging.  We are going out trying to win the golf tournament. Who knows, if we got hot with the putter and clean up the few mistakes, hopefully we are talking about some great stuff come Tuesday night.”

The Ram Masters Invitational will be played on a 7,121-yard, par-70 course at Fort Collins Country Club with 36 holes on Sept 15 and 18 holes on Sept. 16. Kansas will be competing against Abilene Christian, Air Force, Denver, George Washington, McNeese State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Rice, Sacramento State, South Dake State, Utah Valley, Wichita State, Wyoming and host Colorado State.
