Errors Doom Kansas As UAB Sweeps Jayhawks

LARAMIE, Wyo. – After winning its last four contests, the University of Kansas fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-18) to UAB here Saturday evening in KU’s final match of the Cowgirl Classic.

With the loss, Kansas wraps up its nonconference season 6-3 overall, while UAB improves to 6-2.

Sophomore Karina Garlington and senior Natalie Uhart were each named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. It is the third all-tournament appointment this year for Garlington and the second for Uhart.

The Jayhawks were hampered by errors throughout the match hitting just .018, making it hard to get the offense going. Sophomore Karina Garlington led KU with seven kills, the first time in seven matches she has failed to tally double digit kills.

Sophomore Melissa Manda and junior Katie Martincich shared duties in the back court digging up eight and seven balls, respectively.

After dropping its first two sets, Kansas took the court a bit more refreshed in set three taking an early three point lead. However, UAB stayed close eventually taking back the lead. Kills by junior Paige Mazour and Martincich tied the teams again at 15-15 but it was the last time the Jayhawks would catch up with the Blazers as UAB used a 9-2 run to pull out of reach of KU.

The Blazers’ Ivana Bozic led all players with 12 kills and a .407 attack percentage.

The Jayhawks open Big 12 Conference play Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Colorado. Match time with Buffaloes is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT.
