KU's Stowe Named Big 12 Runner of the Week

Sept. 13, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas senior Rebeka Stowe was named the Big 12 Runner of the Week as was announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Olathe, Kan., native collected her second collegiate win and posted a career-best 5K time of 17:43.93 at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge this past Saturday. She led the race from start to finish, outpacing the field by 12 seconds to help the Jayhawks claim the women’s team title for the first time in the event’s 19-year history.

Stowe, who is a product of Olathe Northwest High School, earns her first Big 12 weekly honor and is the first Jayhawk runner to be recognized since Lauren Bonds in 2008. The announcement makes Stowe just the second KU cross country woman in the conference’s history to take home the award.

Stowe is no stranger to conference and regional accolades. Last season she was named to the All-Big 12 team for her 12th-place finish in the Big 12 Championships. She also was the recipient of Academic All-Big 12 and All-Region Academic honors a season ago.

Stowe and the rest of the Jayhawks will be off from competition until Sept. 24 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational.
