Ian Anson and Walt Koelbel combined to lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a fourth place finish after day one at the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club (par-72, 7092 yards) in Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks shot rounds of 297 and 287 and trail leader South Dakota St. by five strokes entering the final round of play. California-Davis and TCU are tied for second place, one shot behind South Dakota St.

“I was happy with how we played today,” said head coach Kit Grove. “With how soft the greens are I think we are going to have to shoot a very low round to win tomorrow.”

Anson, a true freshman hailing from Surrey, England, shot back-to-back rounds of 72 and is tied for fifth place.

“Ian had some rough starts today, but he was able to rally late and that is a very encouraging sign for a true freshman,” said Grove.

Koelbel shot rounds of 74 and 70 and is also tied for fifth with Anson. Koelbel finished tied for 11th at the Kansas Invitational last year.

“Walt had another solid day for us,” said Grove. “He was solid all year for us last year and hopefully he can continue that this year.”

Sophomore Nate Barbee shot a second-round 71 to catapult himself into a tie for 18th place. Barbee will attempt to finish in the top-20 for the second straight year at the event.

Freshman Blake Giroux shot a first-day total of 151 and is tied for 46th place. Senior Andrew Storm shot rounds of 78 and 74 and is tied for 51st place.

Four Jayhawks are competing in the event as individuals. Senior Brandon Hermreck, junior Patrick Roth and junior Bobby Knowles all shot first-day scores of 154 and are tied for 59th place. Junior Bryan Hackenberg is tied for 80th place with a score of 160 in his Jayhawk debut.

Senior Zach Pederson was forced to withdrawal from the event due to injury.

Trent Peterson of South Dakota St. leads the event with a first-day total of 141. Peterson is trailed by Nate Pistacchio and Austin Graham of California-Davis by one shot.

The final round will begin Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CST. Check back to kuathletics.com for a complete recap and results upon the conclusion of the event.
