Tennis Kicks Off Season at Day One of the Hurricane Invitational

Sept. 16, 2005

TULSA, Okla.–The University of Kansas tennis team officially got its 2005 fall season underway Friday, as it competed in day one of the Hurricane Invitational on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The Jayhawks were successful throughout the day, especially in doubles competition. Overall, Kansas posted three victories apiece in both singles and doubles play.

Jayhawk senior Christine Skoda had a very solid opening day, picking up a singles victory over Zuzanne Osinska of Big 12 rival Oklahoma State in straight sets, as well as teaming with junior Brittany Brown to top Tulsa’s team of Tiffany Smith and Agostina Santoro in convincing fashion, 8-1.

Kansas’ solid doubles play continued throughout the day, with the tandems of sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva and freshman Ksenia Bukina, as well as the duo of sophomore Lauren Hommell and freshman Edina Horvath, each notching a victory. Brown and Horvath also both picked up singles wins earlier in the day.

“I was really happy with the way our girls came out and played today,” head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “We came out and battled against some good competition. I was especially pleased with our doubles play later in the day.”

“We saw a lot of things today that we liked, as well as some thing that we need to work on,” Hall-Holt said. “We are really looking forward to getting back on the courts tomorrow.”
