Jayhawks Open Season with Sixth Place Finish at Chip-N-Club Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. — Led by a team-best 73 from sophomore Grace Thiry in Tuesday’s final round of play, the Kansas women’s golf team opened the 2008 fall season with a sixth place finish at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The Jayhawks finished with a three-round total 916 at the par-72, 6,608 yard Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.

After shooting back-to-back rounds of 306 in Monday’s opening rounds, the team finished strong by posting a 304 today. Thiry finished with a final score of 223, good for 10th place individually, after firing a 73 in the final round.

Junior Emily Powers finished with a 228 after posting a 78 in the final round. Fellow junior Meghan Gockel finished with a 334, while sophomore Meghna Bal ended with a 231. Rounding out the lineup for the Jayhawks was redshirt sophomore Sydney Wilson, who finished with a score of 253.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, host of the Invitational, took the team title after posting a three-round total of 884. The Huskers were powered by five individuals who finished in the top-ten. Arkansas-Little Rock’s Sara Wickstrom walked away with the individual title after posting a one-under-par 71 to close the tournament with a 214.
