LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Junior Monica Pezzotti went undefeated in both singles and doubles play on the first day of the 2011 Kansas Invitational Friday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Jayhawks went 4-3 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles competition during day one.

Pezzotti, a junior from Cucuta, Colombia, defeated Amelie Amsallem from UMKC, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of Singles Draw C. She and doubles partner Paulina Los went 2-0 in Doubles Draw A, defeating teams from South Dakota and Nova Southeastern 8-1 and 8-6, respectively.

Other singles winners from day one included sophomore Claire Dreyer, a transfer from Dayton, who routed Ioana Teu from Arkansas State, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Victoria Khanevskaya also took down Bianca Roberts from Nova Southeastern, 6-1, 6-0, in Singles Draw F.

The Jayhawk Invitational will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. The event is free to the public.
