Tennis Completes Day One of KU Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas tennis got off to a strong start Friday afternoon in the first day of the KU Invitational. Opening the season at the Jayhawks Tennis Facility, KU sent two doubles teams to the finals of their respective flights while going 7-3 in singles flights.

The Jayhawks squared off against Saint Louis, UMKC and South Dakota in three doubles and three singles flights, as well as a round-robin slate. Freshman Dylan Windom had a standout Jayhawk debut advancing to the finals of the Blue Doubles Flight with fellow freshman Paulina Los and winning her only singles match.

Windom and Los defeated Saint Louis’ Casey Miller and Stephanie Hollis, 9-7, to advance to tomorrow’s final round. Hailee Elmore and Jenny Nalepa of SLU await the duo in the finals.

Also in the Blue Flight, Sara Lazarevic and Monica Pezzotti made it to the semifinal round with two wins but fell to Elmore and Nalepa. Lazarevic and Pezzotti will compete in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

In the Red Doubles Flight, Amy Barnthouse and Teagan Seeley, both freshmen, also made it to tomorrow’s final round by defeating Ysabel Nunez and Maddy Warder of South Dakota, 8-6. Kate Goff and Victoria Khanevskaya were eliminated in their only doubles match.

In the Red Singles Flight, KU went 2-1 with Windom defeating South Dakota’s Kelsi Foster 6-0, 6-0 and Khanevskaya beating Caitlin Mckenna of SLU, 6-0, 6-1. Barnthouse fell to Suzan Lisenby, of UMKC, 7-6 (4) 7-5.

In the Blue Flight, Wilbert downed Warder 6-1, 6-0 while Los defeated Nunez 6-1, 6-2. In addition, Lazarevic defeated SLU’s Mia Elmore, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

KU went undefeated in the Jayhawk Singles Flight with Pezzotti and Morozova getting the wins.Goff and Seeley both lost their first matches in the round-robin flight.

Play will continue tomorrow at the Jayhawk Tennis Facility and is free to the public.
