HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Kansas trails at the half 21-3 to Southern Miss.

Southern Miss scored first on a one-yard pass play from running back V.J. Floyd to WR Jonathan Massey.

The Golden Eagles were driving again when safety Phillip Strozier came out of nowhere to pick off a pass from Austin Davis. KU was able to capitalize on the turnover when kicker Jacob Branstetter split the uprights on a 37-yard field goal.

USM found the endzone two more times in the half, once on a 49-yard run by running back Desmond Johnson and the other on a punt blocked and returned for a TD.

Kansas rushed 21 times for 57 yards and had 64 passing yards on 9-of-15 attempts from quarterback Jordan Webb. Redshirt freshman Deshaun Sands led the ground attack with 20 yards on four carries in the half. Junior Daymond Patterson caught five balls for 15 yards.

USM totaled 220 yards including 118 on the ground and 102 through the air. QB Austin Davis was 10-of-11 passing. Johnson had 64 yards rushing in the half on three carries.
