Jayhawks Set to Make First-Ever Visit to Jim Colbert Intercollegiate

Sept. 18, 2009

MANHATTAN, Kan. –

The Kansas men’s golf team will look to continue its strong start when they make their first-ever appearance at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Sept. 21-22.

The nine-team field will compete at Colbert Hills Golf Course (par-71, 7,363 yards).

The Jayhawks opened the 2008-09 season with a third place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational. The result included three top-10 individual finishes, led by junior Nate Barbee’s fifth-place finish.

“Colbert Hills is a different golf course than most courses in the Midwest and we are looking forward to the challenge,” said head coach Kit Grove. “It can be a very tough course when the wind blows and I think a key to the event will be pin awareness because the greens are large and angulated.”

Grove will utilize the same starting line-up as he did in the Fairway Club Invitational. The lineup will consist of Barbee, seniors Bryan Hackenberg and Patrick Roth and freshmen Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha.

All five members of the team placed in the top-20 at the Fairway Club Invitational, including top-15 placements for both Gilbert and Gutesha in their collegiate debuts.

Another newcomer, Jeff Bell, and sophomore Bobby Knowles will be making their season debuts when they compete as individuals at the event.

The field will play 54 holes over a two-day period beginning Sept. 21. The players will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final round on Tuesday.
