Kansas Tennis Takes Consolation Rounds in Day Two of KU Invitational

The Kansas tennis team fared well in the consolation rounds Saturday, in the final day of the KU Invitational. In the four-team season-opening event held at the Jayhawk Tennis Facility, the Jayhawks won a total of four consolation flights, with two wins each in doubles flights and singles flights. KU faced Saint Louis, UMKC and South Dakota in the event.
Kate Goff and Victoria Khanevskaya won both consolation brackets in the Red Flight. In the first Red Consolation Flight, Goff and Khanevskaya defeated Ysabel Nunez and Maddy Warder from South Dakota, 8-4. The two followed up the win with an 8-2 victory over South Dakota’s Janea Hagen and Kelsi Foster.
Freshmen Dylan Windom and Paulina Los suffered a loss in the finals of the Blue Doubles Flight, falling 8-3 to Hailee Elmore and Jenny Nalepa of Saint Louis.
KU’s two singles wins came from Teagan Seeley and Monica Pezzotti.
Seeley made up for a loss in the Jayhawk Singles Consolation Flight 1 with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Foster. Pezzotti won 7-6, 6-1 against SLU’s Miller in the Jayhawk Singles Draw.
KU struggled in the remaining singles Flights.
In the Blue Flight, Los defeated her teammate Lazarevic to move on to the final round. But with Nalepa ahead 3-2 in the first set, Los retired due to injury.
Prior to taking on Los in the final, Nalepa played a tough three-set match against Erin Wilbert. Nalepa took the first set 6-4 before Wilbert rallied for a 6-2 win to force a third set. But Nalepa earned the 6-2 victory in the third set to advance.
