Kansas Takes Third At Chip-N Club Invitational

The University of Kansas women’s golf team moved up two spots to finish third out of 14 teams after completion of the final round Tuesday at Nebraska’s Chip-N Club Invitational. The Jayhawks finished with a total score of 943 (322-317-304) at Yankee Hill Country Club (6,040-yard, par-72) in Lincoln, Neb.

The Jayhawks’ final round score of 304 was the lowest score of the day, which moved them past Missouri State by two strokes and Big 12 rival Kansas State by four strokes. Nebraska took top honors for the fourth straight year with a total score of 929 and Campbell finished second with 935.

Freshman Meghan Gockel led the Jayhawks throughout the tournament to finish in a tie for fourth place. Gockel had a final-round score of 74 to bring her total to 231, while freshman Emily Powers tied for 10th place with a total score of 236.

Senior Amanda Costner tied for 16th with after shooting 240, and freshman Camilla Svensson finished in a tie for 24th place with 243. Junior Annie Giangrosso tied for 27th with 244 and senior Jill Womble, who played as an individual, tied for 37th with 249.

“I am very pleased with the round,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “They did a great job coming back. There were tough holes locations today and they handled themselves well. We will continue to get better each time.”

The Jayhawks take a one week break from competition, but will be back Oct. 2-3 to host the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
