Crimson Wins Kansas Softball Intrasquad Scrimmage

Sept. 20, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Team Crimson defeated Team Blue 6-1 in Kansas softball’s intrasquad scrimmage Saturday. The contest was the Jayhawks’ first taste of competition for the 2010-11 season as KU prepares for its fall opener on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

Team Crimson’s junior infielder Marissa Ingle and freshman infielder Ashley Newman both went 2-for-3 with one walk for the winning team. Newman also recorded two stolen bases during the contest.

In the circle, freshman pitcher Kristin Martinez started for Team Crimson allowing just one hit over the first four innings and struck out three batters. Senior Allie Clark came in to pitch the final 2 and 2/3 innings in hitless relief, fanning four batters to help seal the victory.

Freshman Kendra Cullum led Team Blue going 2-for-3 at the plate and showcased her defensive skills with a bases-loaded diving play at shortstop to prevent a run. Redshirt junior Liz Kocon added a double in the effort in her first contest back since Feb. 14 last spring.

Junior transfer Ashley Spencer tossed the first four innings for Team Blue giving up four hits and striking out two. Sophomore Alex Jones finished out the contest from the pitcher’s circle allowing the final two runs.
