Riley Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

Sept. 20, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Freshman libero Brianne Riley led the Kansas volleyball team with 3.67 digs per set in two matches last week to earn Big 12 Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced by the league office Monday.

The 5-6 defensive specialist recorded a team-high 15 digs and was perfect in 34 service receptions Saturday to help the Jayhawks to a 3-2 win versus Texas A&M. TAMU was coming off a sweep of No. 8 Texas and four-match winning streak prior to the contest. The victory also gave Kansas head coach Ray Bechard his 200th career win at KU and stopped a seven-match skid with the Aggies.

Earlier in the week, Riley led Kansas with 18 digs at Kansas State Wednesday in KU’s conference opener and chipped in a season-high six assists.

Riley became the first Jayhawk to earn a Big 12 weekly volleyball award since current players Karina Garlington and Nicole Tate earned offensive and rookie of the week honors, respectively, on Nov. 10, 2008. Riley is also the 10th KU player all-time to earn volleyball player of the week accolades from the Big 12.
