Kansas Tennis to Kick Off Fall Season at Deacon Classic

Sept. 21, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas tennis team will begin its fall campaign this weekend as it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the Wake Forest University Deacon Classic. The event features an impressive field of some of the nation’s top programs, including Indiana, Syracuse and host-school Wake Forest.

The tournament, which will run from Friday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24, will consist of four singles draws and two doubles flights.

KU will field six members of its team in the tournament’s various singles draws, and two doubles tandems will compete as well.

Seven members from last year’s squad that went 14-11 — the program’s highest win total since 2001-02 — return for the upcoming season. Kansas also welcomes Hungarian native Kunigunda Dorn, who will be making her first appearance in a Jayhawk uniform this weekend at the Classic.

KU had a successful summer as well, highlighted by junior Lauren Hommell and sophomore Edina Horvath capturing the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit in Lawrence.

Following the trip to Winston-Salem, Kansas will play in three more events this fall. The Hoosier Classic, the ITA Central Regionals, and the North Carolina Tournament will round out KU’s fall slate before the spring dual season gets underway in late January.
