Horvath Paces KU at Day One of Cissie Leary Tournament

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>PHILADELPHIAJunior Edina Horvath advanced to the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw and to the round-of-16 in the main singles bracket, leading the University of Kansas tennis team at day one of the season-opening Cissie Leary Tournament.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Horvath, who, along with senior Elizaveta Avdeeva, makes up the nation’s No. 36 ranked doubles duo and the event’s No. 1 overall seed, followed a first-round bye with an 8-6 win over Penn’s Sadaka and Tansill to reach the round-of-eight.

A Budapest, Hungary native, Horvath was also victorious in two singles contests on Friday, taking straight-set decisions over Sadaka and Cornell’s Elizabeth Googe to move into the round-of-16.

In other singles action, Avdeeva and junior Yuliana Svistun each won their first-round match, but fell in their second contest of the day, while sophomore Kunigunda Dorn and freshmen Mymee Tokuda and Maria Martinez lost their opening matches.

Dorn, Martinez and Tokuda each reached the round-of-16 in consolation play, while Avdeeva and Svistun will begin round-robin consolation action on Saturday.

In doubles competition, KU’s tandem of Dorn and Martinez took its first-round match over St. Bonaventure’s Delgado and Callaghan, but then were defeated in the second round. Also competing together were Svistun and Tokuda, who lost their opening-round contest. Both duos will compete in consolation play starting Saturday.

Action at the Cissie Leary Tournament will pick back up at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and run throughout the day, with both main draw and consolation matches set to be played in singles and doubles.
