Barbee Shines During Day One at Rain-Shortened Jim Colbert Intercollegiate

Sept. 21, 2009

MANHATTAN, Kan. –

Nate Barbee fired a first round 69 to place him atop the individual leaderboard at the rain-shortened Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Colbert Hills Golf Course.

Morning rains in Manhattan caused the morning round to be postponed and for the event to be shortened to 36 holes. The team shot a first round 297 to place themselves in third place entering the final round.

“The course played difficult today with the wet conditions and the wind was completely different than it was during the practice round,” said head coach Kit Grove.

Barbee, who opened the season with a fifth place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational, shot a 33 on the back nine at Colbert Hills. Barbee will attempt to claim his first career individual victory in the final round tomorrow.

“Like I say every week Nate (Barbee) is our rock,” said Grove. “The harder the conditions the better for him because he is such a consistent player and is mentally strong.”

Senior Bryan Hackenberg carded a 75 in round one and is tied for 11th place. Freshman Chris Gilbert shot a 75 to place tied for 18th, while fellow freshman Alex Gutesha fired a 76 to enter the final round tied for 20th.

Senior Patrick Roth shot an 85 in round one and is tied for 48th.

Sophomore Blake Giroux and junior Bobby Knowles are competing in the event as individuals. Giroux shot in 85 in round one and Knowles carded a 91.

Kansas State, the host school, is leading the event by eight strokes over Illinois State entering the final round. Kansas trails the Wildcats by 10 strokes.

The final round is scheduled to begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday morning. Check back to kuathleitcs.com for a complete recap and results from the final round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate.
