Dorn, Jayhawks Complete Solid Day at Deacon Tennis Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Kunigunda Dorn, competing in her first collegiate tournament, advanced to the semifinals of the Flight C doubles bracket with teammate Yuliana Svistun, and also won her first match in the Flight B singles bracket, highlighting a strong opening day for the Jayhawks at the Deacon Classic in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Winston-Salem, N.C.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Dorn defeated OhioState’s Ally Mueller, 6-3, 6-4, to move on to Saturday’s singles quarterfinals. The Sopron, Hungary, native joins sophomore Edina Horvath, who beat Syracuse’s Katie Bramante in the Flight C singles draw, and Svistun, who had a first-round bye in Flight D, as quarterfinalists in their respective brackets.

Sophomore Ksenia Bukina, junior Lauren Hommell and junior Stephanie Smith each fell in their first singles match of the day.

After a first-round bye, Dorn and Svistun handled North Carolina-Charlotte’s duo of Cunningham and Flemming, 8-1, to earn a spot in the Flight C semifinalsfinals. KU’s other doubles tandem of Horvath and Hommell won their opening match against Dartmouth’s Snow and Winingham, but fell to EastTennesseeState’s Flina and Stupak in their bid to make the Flight B finals.

The Jayhawks will continue play at the Deacon Classic on Saturday, with singles and doubles play, including backdraw action, scheduled to take place throughout the day.
