LAWRENCE, Kan. – Emily Powers shot a two-round total of 152 to tie for fourth place individually to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a fourth-place standing after the first day of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Monday. The tournament, hosted by Kansas, is being played at the Alvamar Public Golf Course.

Oral Roberts has the team lead heading into Tuesday’s final round. ORU shot a 615 total to lead Illinois State (617), Nebraska (619), Kansas (626) and South Florida (628) in the 16-team field.

KU’s Jennifer Clark leads the field, but is playing as an individual. Clark shot rounds of 74 and 75, one shot better than Eve Santillan of Oral Roberts.

Powers shot an opening-round 77, followed by a 75 in round two to pace the Jayhawks. Sophomores Meghna Bal and Grace Thiry finished the day with scores of 158 and 159, respectively. Rounding out the lineup for the team was freshman Kaylynd Carson, who shot a 161, and junior Meghan Gockel, who finished with a 163.

Other Jayhawks playing as individuals include Maria Jackson (tied for 30th at 159), Sydney Wilson (tied for 70th at 169) and Alyssa Rainbolt (tied for 75th at 170).

After round one, Illinois State led the field with a score of 302, but fell to second place after they were overtaken by Oral Roberts after round two. The Golden Eagles used rounds of 307 and 308 to finish the day in first with a field-leading score of 615.

The Jayhawks home tournament will conclude Tuesday with the final round set to begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Check back to kuathletics.com for results and a complete recap at the conclusion of tomorrow’s round.
