Stuckey Recognized On Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Sept. 22, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior football player Darrell Stuckey has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The award recognizes just 11 Football Bowl Series football student-athletes nationally for outstanding efforts in volunteerism and community service.

Stuckey, a safety for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks, was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2008 and is a candidate for a number of national awards this season. In his most recent action he recorded a team-high 11 tackles in KU’s 44-16 victory against Duke on Saturday.

However, his off-the-field activities have also put him among the nation’s elite. One of the most community-involved student-athletes at Kansas, his volunteer activities include speaking at schools and youth groups, working with Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Read With the Jayhawks programs among many others.

Voted a team captain for his senior season, Stuckey also represents the student body on the KU student senate after winning a seat during elections last spring.

“Darrell is an outstanding representative, not just of Kansas Athletics, but of the entire University of Kansas student body,” said KU Athletics Director Lew Perkins. “He is a tremendous role model for youth everywhere. His great example has earned him respect from faculty, administrators, coaches and teammates.”

The Kansas City, Kan. native was named a Big 12 Community of Champions member and earned his team’s co-Leadership Award a year ago. This season he is a candidate for a number of national awards including the Bronko Nagurski Award (top defender), Bednarik Award (top defender), Thorpe Award (top defensive back), Lott Award (on and off the field success for defender) and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award (on and off the field excellence).

“These 22 student-athletes represent thousands of college football players who make a difference in their communities through volunteer service on campus and in their hometowns,” said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. “We’re proud to join Allstate in recognizing these young people who are dedicated to improving the world in which we live.”
