Svistun Paces KU Tennis at Day Two of Deacon Classic

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – University of Kansas sophomore Yuliana Svistun advanced to the championship match of the Flight D singles bracket, headlining the Jayhawks’ showing at day two of the Wake Forest University Deacon Classic in Winston-Salem.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Svistun opened up on Saturday by defeating Indiana’s Erin Clark, 6-0, 6-1, before earning a spot in the championship match by beating Syracuse’s Carolina Huignard. The Ufa, Russia, native will face WakeForest’s Jenna Loeb in the title contest on Sunday.

In doubles play, KU’s tandem of sophomore Edina Horvath and junior Lauren Hommell took home third place in the Flight B doubles bracket after besting Syracuse’s Vasilyeva and Bramante, 8-2.

Horvath, who after topping Dartmouth’s Carley Markovitz, will take on EastTennesseeState’s Elena Volobueva in the Flight C 5th-place match on Sunday.

Junior Stephanie Smith will play UNC-Charlotte’s Candace Cunningham for the consolation final in Flight C singles draw following her win over OhioState’s Kristin Messmer.

Hommell, sophomore Ksenia Bukina and freshman Kunigunda Dorn are each slated to compete in consolation and backdraw matches on the final day of the Classic as well.
