The event’s No. 1 overall seed, Avdeeva and Horvath, ranked 36th in the nation, breezed through two more opponents on Saturday, winning contests over tandems from Cornell and Virginia Tech by a combined score of 16-11.
The duo, which was named All-Big 12 last season, will face off against Penn’s Kosiminskaya and Koulbitskaya in Sunday’s championship match. A win would give the pair its second major-tournament title in as many years, as they took home the championship at the ITA Central Regionals last fall.
Horvath could not carry over her doubles success into singles play, however, as the Budapest, Hungary native fell in the main draw’s round-of-16 to Yale’s Lauren Ritz.
In other singles action, junior Yuliana Svistun won a match over Virginia Tech’s Abbey Walker in round-robin singles consolation play, while sophomore Kunigunda Dorn and freshmen Maria Martinez and Mymee Tokuda were each eliminated from the consolation singles bracket in the round-of-16.
Dorn and Svistun also defeated Virginia Tech’s tandem of Cramp and James to move to the quarterfinals of the consolation doubles bracket and will take on Columbia’s Suda and Henry on Sunday.
