The tandem, which is ranked 36th in the country and was the event’s No. 1 seed, fell in the final, 8-6, to Penn’s second-seeded team of Kosiminskaya and Koulbitskaya. Despite coming up shy of the championship, Avdeeva and Horvath had a strong weekend, winning three matches by a combined score of 24-16.
In other doubles action, the Jayhawks’ duo of Kunigunda Dorn and Yuliana Svistun were eliminated from doubles consolation play in the quarterfinals.
Svistun, however, did get a singles win on Sunday, knocking off Columbia’s Nina Suda, 6-4, 6-3, in a round-robin consolation contest.
Next up for KU will be the ITA All-American Championships, where Avdeeva and Horvath will compete in the qualifying doubles draw. Avdeeva will also play in the pre-qualifying singles bracket.
Pre-qualifying will run Sept. 29-30 on the campus of UCLA, and qualifying action in both singles and doubles will begin Oct. 1 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Kansas’ next team event will be the Hoosier Classic, which will take place in Bloomington, Ind. and run Oct. 5-7.
