Powers and Clark Lead Jayhawks to Fifth Place Finish at Marilynn Smith Women's Golf Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Emily Powers and Jennifer Clark finished one-two in the final individual standings for the Kansas women’s golf team, which finished in fifth place Tuesday at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. The Jayhawks finished with a final round of 308 to place fifth at their home tournament at Alvamar Public Golf Course.
Powers, a junior from Quincy, Ill., fired a tournament-low 71 in the final round to finish atop the individual standings with a score of 223. Following close behind was Clark, a sophomore from Kansas City, Kan., who finished with a 74-75-76—225. Clark was competing as an individual.
Kansas sophomore Meghna Bal finished the tournament with final score of 236, which was good for a tie for 20th place. Sophomore Grace Thiry finished tied for 28th with a final total of 238. Rounding out the Kansas lineup were freshman Kaylynd Carson (241, T-37th) and junior Meghan Gockel (244, T-43rd).
Oral Roberts and Nebraska were tied at 926 after 54 holes, but Oral Roberts edged out the Huskers in a two-hole playoff to take home the team title. The Golden Eagles were led by three top-10 individuals for the tournament.
Other Jayhawks competing as individuals included Maria Jackson (81-78-89–248), Sydney Wilson (90-79-81—250) and Alyssa Rainbolt (84-86-88—258).
The Jayhawks return to action Sept. 29-30 when they head to Columbia, Mo., to play in the Johnie Imes Invitational. Check back to kuathletics.com for results and a complete recap following the conclusion of each day.
