KU Tennis Successful In Day One Of Hurricane Invitational

Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Kansas tennis team posted a solid 3-1 record in singles competition and a 4-2 record in doubles at the first day of the Hurricane Invitational at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Jayhawks were led by the the strong play of freshmen Stephanie Smith and Lauren Hommell who combined to go 6-0 in doubles and singles competition.

Smith earned a decisive victory over Mali Gakovic of Southwest Missouri State, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed up with sophomore Ashley Filberth to defeat the Wichita State team of Alejandra Ripoll and Genevieve Spink, 8-5. Smith also teamed up with Carolina Ardila of SMS to defeat Liz Bingier and Daniela Renovales from Illinois State, 8-4.

The doubles team of junior Christine Skoda and freshman Lauren Hommell went 2-0 on the day with a victory over Liz Garza and Paty Manzur of SMS, 8-4, and the duo posted an 8-2 victory over Wichita State’s Anna Exeni and Wendi Webster. Hommell also notched a 6-2, 6-1, victory over SMS’s Paty Manzur. Junior Luiza Loureiro blanked Ardila from SMS 6-0, 6-0, in her singles match.
