LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas softball team opened its fall season Saturday with wins over Pittsburg State (2-1, eight innings) and Missouri Southern (7-0) at Arrocha Ballpark. Senior Serena Settlemier and freshman Val Chapple led KU with three hits apiece in the wins.

Junior righy Kassie Humphreys pitched the first five innings against Pitt State, striking out seven, walking five and allowing just one hit. Freshman Valerie George struck out three and held the Gorillas hitless in the last three innings to pick up the win.

Against Missouri Southern, Settlemier struck out 11 of the 12 batters she faced in the first four innings. George finished up the game with three strikeouts in three innings to complete the no-hitter. Settlemier, Chapple and senior Destiny Frankenstein each had two hits in the game and senior Jessica Moppin hit her first home run of the spring.

On Sunday, KU plays Rockhurst at noon and Missouri Southern at 2 p.m.
