Svistun's Title Caps KU's Weekend at Deacon Tennis Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – University of Kansas sophomore Yuliana Svistun captured the championship of the Flight D singles bracket, and sophomore Edina Horvath placed fifth in the Flight C bracket, capping a strong weekend for the Jayhawks at the Wake Forest University Deacon Classic.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Svistun, whose first place finish in Flight D was the best of any <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas player at the three-day event, beat WakeForest’s Jenna Loeb, 6-1, 6-4, to earn the title.
Horvath’s victory in the fifth-place match came over EastTennesseeState’s Elena Volovueva, 6-4, 6-1. Also in the Flight C singles draw, junior Stephanie Smith won the consolation side of the bracket on Sunday by defeating UNC-Charlotte’s Candace Cunningham, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
KU will next be in action when it travels to Bloomington, Ind. for the Hoosier Classic. The tournament will run Oct. 6-8 on the campus of the University of Indiana.
