Kansas Heads to Colorado for Invitational

Sept. 24, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After finishing the first half of its fall season in a tie for sixth at the Kansas Invitational, the Kansas men’s golf team looks to get the second half of their season started off on the right foot when it travels to Erie, Colo. to compete in the Colorado Invitational, September 20-21.

Head coach Kit Grove opted to make one lineup change for this tournament, replacing freshman Bryce Brown with senior Jeff Bell. Bell, a walk-on from Wichita, Kan., will be making his season debut. Last season, Bell competed in eight events and managed to post two top 20 finishes. Brown is a freshman who made his collegiate debut at the Kansas Invitational, shooting a 233 over the 54 hole event.

Also joining Bell in Colorado will be senior Nate Barbee (76.80 scoring average this season). Barbee fired a 70 on the final day of the Kansas Invitational and coach Grove really believes that he is close to getting back to where he needs to be.

“He’s getting close but he’s not quite where he was last season,” Grove said of Barbee. “He’s a motivated kid and he’s a good kid. He just needs a couple more rounds like that.”

Sophomore Chris Gilbert, who is currently tied for first on the team in scoring average at 75.00, is making the trip as well. Gilbert was the individual standout for the Jayhawks at the Kansas Invitational, finishing in a tie for 14th. Junior Doug Quinones also has a scoring average of 75.00 thus far and will be in the lineup this tournament.

Rounding out the team is Sophomore Alex Gutesha, who will be playing in his second tournament of the season when he participates in the Colorado Invitational. Gutesha shot a 224 at the Kansas Invitational.

This is the fourth of six total tournaments for the team this fall. In the first half of the season, the team posted sixth place finishes in all three of its tournaments. Following the Colorado Invitational, the Jayhawks will compete in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Kansas City, Mo. on October 18-19. The fall season will then conclude when the team participates in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. on Oct. 25-26.

Kansas will be competing against 12 other schools in Erie. The schools include: Colorado State, Colorado, Air Force, Denver, Wyoming, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Utah, San Jose State, UTEP, Southern Utah, and BYU.
