Jayhawks Win Kansas Softball Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas softball wrapped up its first weekend of Fall Ball Sunday with wins over Rockhurst (6-1) and Missouri Southern (5-1) at Arrocha Ballpark. Senior shortstop Destiny Frankenstein led the Jayhawks with four hits and scored three runs in the victories.

Freshman Valerie George got the start against Rockhurst and struck out nine and allowed just two hits in five innings of work. Junior Kassie Humphreys struck out one and gave up two hits in two innings to wrap up the victory. Frankenstein and freshmen Val Chapple and Tiffany Craner each had two hits against Rockhurst to bring the Jayhawks’ hit total to 10.

KU, the #1 seed in the tournament, held #2 seed Missouri Southern hitless in its final game. Senior righty Serena Settlemier struck out seven in the first four innings and Humphreys struck out three in the final three innings to end the game. MSSU scored a run in the top of the fourth on two Jayhawk errors in the infield.

Frankenstein, sophomore catcher Elle Pottorf, junior first baseman Nicole Washburn and senior Nettie Fierros each added two hits in the win for a game total of 12. Chapple and Pottorf also each had a game-high two RBI.

The Jayhawks continue their Fall season Wednesday when they host William Jewel at 2:30 p.m.
