KU Goes 3-1 in Fall Jayhawk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas softball team opened its 2006 Fall season at Arrocha Ballpark Saturday and Sunday with three wins and one loss. Senior hurler Kassie Humphreys led the pitching effort with 16 strikeouts in two appearances and sophomore Val Chapple went 6-for-7 in two games Sunday to pace the Jayhawk hitters.

Saturday’s Results

KU 11, Pittsburg State 2
Humphreys struck out 10 and gave up two hits in five innings and freshman Sarah Vertelka pitched the final inning as KU prevailed, 11-2, in its first game of the weekend. Sophomore Stevie Crisosto went 3-for-3 with a double and home run for four RBI to lead the Jayhawk offense. After taking a medical redshirt in the Spring, sophomore Elle Pottorf went 2-for-3 with two RBI in first her appearance since the 2005 season. Sophomore Erika Simington totaled two hits and rookie Sara Ramirez went 2-for-2 with a double.

Missouri Western 2, KU 1
Sophomore Val George fanned six batters and allowed four hits and two earned runs in seven innings to take the loss Saturday. Junior Betsy Wilson led the KU offense with two hits and Pottorf walked three times in the effort.

Sunday’s Results

KU 8, Pittsburg State 0
Vertelka took the five-inning win over the Gorillas and Chapple went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI in the Jayhawks’ first game on Sunday. Sophomore transfer Stephanie McCaulley was 2-for-3 and Wilson was a perfect 2-for-2 while freshman Allie Stanton notched her first home run of the Fall and had two RBI in the win.

KU 10, Butler 3
Humphreys struck out six and held Butler hittless through the first three innings to open the Jayhawks’ last game of the weekend. Freshman Caitlin Kenney gave up five hits and three runs over the next three innings and George pitched a hitless inning of relief to secure the win for KU. Chapple went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and freshman Tracy Lubken was 2-for-3 in the win. Junior transfer Addy Lucero also notched two hits for KU.

The Jayhawks will host Johnson County, UMKC and Emporia State Saturday (Sept. 30) and Sunday (Oct. 1) at Arrocha to wrap up Fall Ball in Lawrence. Click here for the complete schedule. Admission for all games is free and open to the public.
