Kansas Head Coach Bill Self to Participate in Coaches vs. Cancer Season Tip-Off at CBE in KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas head coach Bill Self will join other local college basketball coaches at the Sprint Center in Kansas City as they discuss their team’s outlook for the upcoming season, host a silent auction and help raise funds to fight cancer at the Coaches vs. Cancer kick-off event Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Self, along with head basketball coaches from the University of Missouri, University of Missouri at Kansas City and Kansas State University will tip-off their season with a Coaches vs. Cancer® Cocktail Reception – including a special appearance by former Missouri head coach and cancer survivor Norm Stewart.
This first-ever Kansas/Missouri joint Coaches vs. Cancer kick-off event will be Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the College Basketball Experience in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, 1401 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Coaches’ presentations will begin at 6:15 p.m. and include remarks from Coaches vs. Cancer founding father Stewart as well coaches Self, Mike Anderson, Matt Brown and Frank Martin.
Coach Self hopes he, his players and coaches can help make a difference in the fight against cancer. “No one is immune to cancer’s offensive strength. That’s why I volunteer for the Coaches vs. Cancer Program,” Self said. “The event on Oct. 7th is a great way to raise funds so, together, we can outscore cancer and win this battle.”
Coach Stewart explains, “As a cancer survivor, I encourage people to get appropriate screening tests and talk to their doctors about cancer risks. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if three groups – people over 50 years of age, people with a family history and people with symptoms – would get a colonoscopy. Coaches vs. Cancer is a way for us to become involved and make people aware about the fight against this deadly disease. Meet your favorite Coach and have some fun at this event on Oct. 7th.”
The College Basketball Experience is a 41,500 square foot facility with two floors of unique and entertaining space, with hands-on basketball experience activities and the Hall of Fame. Coaches vs. Cancer attendees will enjoy several venues throughout the museum as well as these interactive options: Beat The Clock, Call The Highlights, Center Court, Clean The Glass, Get In The Zone, Kids Court, Make The Pass, Shoot From Downtown and much more!
Hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and soft drinks will be served. A silent auction featuring sports collectibles and memorabilia will also be included in the evening’s festivities.
Adult tickets to the event are $85 per person and include refreshments, admission to the CBE interactive center and Hall of Fame, silent auction, coaches’ presentations and more. The Coaches vs. Cancer program has played an important part in promoting the mission of the American Cancer Society for 14 years. Coaches vs. Cancer is a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of our country’s basketball coaches to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and reduce cancer risk through education programs.
